Clay Sunflower Tutorial – Now Available

This tutorial is available exclusively in the Rose & Basic Course until September 30, 2025.
After that, it will be archived and accessible in the Garden Course.

Our summer lesson – how to create a lifelike sunflower from cold porcelain – is now live on YouTube Membership.
In this video, you’ll learn step-by-step how to sculpt the center, petals, leaves, stem, and calyx, bringing them together into a beautifully realistic flower.

The Bold Beauty of Summer – Sunflowers

While sunflowers come in many varieties and sizes, for this project I chose a smaller, easy-to-display variety with a fresh green-tinted center.

By crafting the large center, radiating petals, sturdy stem, and detailed leaves, you’ll have a sunflower that stands out whether displayed on its own in a vase, or as the star of a bouquet or arrangement.

You can also make just the flower head for cake decorations, small accessories, or other floral art projects.

Creating and assembling the flower center takes a little extra time, but the process is straightforward once you know the sequence.
The video walks you through how to use the molds, shape the petals and leaves, and apply color effectively – all to achieve a clean, professional finish.

Tools & Molds Used

In this tutorial, I use my original cutters and veiners (molds) for shaping the parts.

The sunflower center mold, petal cutter, and leaf mold featured in the lesson are available for purchase at my ▶︎ Booth shop.
You’re welcome to use your own cutters or molds, but if you use ones with similar sizes and shapes, you’ll get results closer to the sample shown in the lesson.

The lesson also includes a downloadable, printable PDF template that you can use as a size guide – perfect for those who want to hand-cut petals and leaves without a cutter.
