The clay tulip lesson is now available!
This lesson will be available to view until June 30 in the Rose & Basic Course (exclusive to members).
I've uploaded the spring lesson video on how to make tulips to my YouTube Membership channel. In the lesson, I clearly demonstrate how to make tulips using resin clay.
There are so many varieties of tulips—parrot tulips, double blooms, open-style tulips—but the first one I wanted to create was the classic tulip. You know, the one that instantly comes to mind when you think “tulip”—a simple, slightly closed shape.
Surprisingly tricky?! A slightly closed tulip with a floral center
Since it has fewer petals, I thought I could make it quickly—just a simple project! But once I started prototyping, I realized it was more challenging than expected...I had to make the bottom of the petals plump and curved, fit the petals snugly together, and still keep the top parts from opening up. This turned out to be quite a challenge. I experimented with drying techniques, wire placement, and curving methods. I was also working on making custom molds and cutters at the same time, so in the end, it took about two months.
In the video, I guide you step by step in an organized way—but every part of the process, from pressing the shapes and choosing tools, to drying methods and work order, all carry important meaning.
Once you understand the steps, it’s not technically too difficult. If you follow the video carefully and go along with it, you’ll be able to create your tulip efficiently and beautifully.
The pollen part isn’t very noticeable, so I debated whether to include it. But I figured some of you might want to know how to make it—so I added it just in case.
Using common materials, you can easily make colored pollen (powder) in any color you like.
